AARP FLORIDA: SENATE PASSAGE PAVES WAY FOR HISTORIC REFORM OF HEALTH-CARE SYSTEM

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Jeff Johnson, AARP Florida’s Health Action Now state campaign manager, issued the following statement today on health-reform action in Washington:

“Today the United States Senate adopted a historic health-reform bill. For older Floridians, the Senate vote means our nation is one step closer to reform that would protect Medicare’s guaranteed benefits, improve preventive care and provide access to affordable, high-quality coverage for hundreds of thousands of Floridians for whom health insurance is now either unaffordable or unobtainable at any price. Insurers would be barred from denying coverage because of your health or age. In final health-reform legislation, our national leaders have promised to close the dreaded Medicare Part D ‘doughnut hole’ over time.”

“For AARP, great challenges remain. Early next year, we will work to achieve final passage of a consensus health-care reform bill. Once health reform becomes a reality, we will work to help our members and all older Floridians understand how to best navigate this new health-care landscape.”

“More than 50 years ago, a retired California high-school principal, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, founded AARP after she found a former colleague reduced to living in a chicken coop, impoverished by health-care costs. Dr. Andrus committed AARP to a fight for improved health and financial security for all generations of Americans.”

“The fight goes on. But Dr. Andrus would be proud to know that America has taken a big step closer to an important victory today."

The U.S. Senate Monday voted to move forward with health care reforms that will begin to bring needed relief to millions of Americans struggling with high costs and discriminatory insurance company practices. Pending legislation would protect the guaranteed benefits that people in Medicare rely on, improve preventive care and make progress toward ending the rampant discrimination used by insurers to deny coverage to those who need it most.

AARP sent a letter to each Senate office informing them that the Association designated Monday’s cloture vote on the manager’s amendment to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act an “AARP Key Vote.” AARP will report back to its members and the public how each Senator votes on the procedural measure that would allow the Senate to end debate and move towards a final up-or-down vote on the bill.

“AARP Florida commends Sen. Nelson for voting to move forward on health-care reform to protect guaranteed Medicare benefits and help millions of older Americans overcome the challenges of accessing affordable, quality health services,” said AARP Florida State Director Lori Parham. “This legislation would lower drug costs, provide relief by beginning to limit age discrimination by health-insurance companies and strengthen our system of long-term services and supports. AARP will be working with Florida’s members of Congress to strengthen this legislation further in conference and to help make meaningful health-care reform a reality.”

“It’s unfortunate that an issue as important as health-care reform is subject to political delay,” Parham added. “We’re disappointed that Sen. LeMieux voted to block action on this important bill.”

AARP notified the 111th Congress that it was tracking roll call votes on key legislation important to its nearly 40 million members and reporting the outcomes of these votes back to its members and all older Americans.  “After hearing from AARP and considering everything they’ve learned about health-care reform, our members support reform by more than a two-to-one margin,” Parham said. “AARP Florida will be there to give our members, as well as all Americans, the most accurate information we can.”

AARP members and all older Americans can see how their representatives voted on health care reform by going to www.aarp.org/governmentwatch. AARP’s Government Watch is a one-stop online portal that will be tracking and publicizing every designated key vote on issues facing Americans age 50-plus. A “Key Vote Summary” highlighting votes on these issues will be published at the end of each congressional session.

Tallahassee, Fla. – AARP Florida State Director Lori Parham issued the following statement today on comments by leaders of the U.S. Senate this week committing the Senate to closing the “doughnut hole” in final conference deliberations on health-reform legislation:

“The way is now clear for a final health-care reform bill to provide secure, affordable access to costly prescription drugs for the 300,000 Floridians who fall into the Medicare Part D coverage gap every year,” Parham said.

“So far, this is a promise, not a final action.” Parham noted. “But in remarks by Sen. Bill Nelson and others, leading senators made a firm commitment this week that the Senate will support closing the Part D “doughnut hole” in final health-reform conference action.  The U.S. House already has voted to close the doughnut hole.”

“AARP Florida thanks Sen. Nelson for his hard work this year to close the ‘doughnut hole’ over time. AARP members will be watching the health-care reform legislation closely to ensure that the Senate honors its commitment.”
