With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data.

The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? BBB offers the following advice:

** If a U.S.

Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions.

Never invite anyone you don't know into your home.

** Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information.

Do not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census.

While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range,

the Census Bureau will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers nor will employees solicit donations.

Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home.  However,

the Census Bureau will not contact you by Email, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census.

Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The vast majority of us would like to remain in our homes and neighborhoods as we age – not go to a retirement community or nursing home.   The question is how to make aging at home safer and more comfortable?

If you ask organizers in several District communities, they’d tell you that it takes a Village . By that, they mean a grassroots membership organization, modeled after Beacon Hill Village www.beaconhillvillage.org in Boston, through which neighbors help neighbors access support and services to age in place. That could mean anything from a ride to the doctor, home repair referrals, or someone to take in your mail when you’re on vacation all the way to 24-7 home care. Some Villages also offer social opportunities from chess clubs to yoga classes to lectures and cultural outings.

Since October 2007, six Villages have opened their doors in DC -- more than in any city nationwide other than San Francisco. Five of them agreed to participate in an AARP DC study released on October 26, 2009 at the Village to Village Network  Symposium in Washington, DC.

Check out “Neighbors Helping Neighbors: A Qualitative Study of Villages Operating in the District of Columbia”  http://www.aarp.org/research/surveys/livcom/housing/aip/articles/dcvillages.html to learn about their best practices, challenges and advice for Village organizers across the country regarding:

Please participate in the AARP DC Community Food Drive on Thursday, October 22, 9am – 6pm., and help us feed hungry Washingtonians.

Area food pantries—and the families who rely on them—are asking for our assistance. At a time of desperate need, demand is going through the roof and donations are not keeping pace.   According to the Capital Area Food Bank, half of DC’s children under age 18 are at risk of hunger, and a third of seniors are at risk or suffering from hunger.   With your generous donation, we can do much to help the Capital Area Food Bank shore up its supply of non-perishable food items and better meet the needs of struggling families.

Scroll down for a list of priority food items (no glass containers, please!) and the food drop off points AARP has established across the city – at one Safeway or Giant store in each of the 8 wards.  Please help us make a difference!

AARP NAMES DC-BASED FINRA, Pepco Holdings, Inc and VHA 2009 BEST EMPLOYERS FOR WORKERS OVER 50

Applications Set Record for 9 Year Old Program

Washington, DC – FINRA, Pepco Holdings, Inc (PHI) and the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA), all based in Washington, DC, have been named by AARP to its 2009 list of Best Employers for Workers 50 and Over. The three organizations join an impressive list of 50 honorees announced today by AARP CEO Barry Rand.

More than 200 employers applied for Best Employers honors, the highest total in the nine year history of the program designed to highlight exemplary policies toward aged 50 and over workers.

“Employers are increasingly recognizing the importance of innovative policies - generous health and wellness benefits, opportunities for continuing education, and alternative work arrangements such as flextime and job sharing - as they seek to retain and recruit experienced workers,” said AARP DC Interim Director Louis Davis, Jr.

“FINRA, PHI and the Department of Veterans Affairs have demonstrated progressive policies and programs for workers over 50, and have earned the honor,” added Davis.

FINRA, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, is the largest independent regulator for all securities firms doing business in the United States. The company provides employees with generous benefits and educational/training opportunities in addition to a flexible environment for employees of all ages. FINRA retirees can take advantage of many of the same health benefits as active employees and can be rehired in various capacities. Twenty percent of FINRA employees are 50+.

Pepco Holdings, Inc. (PHI) has successfully hired mature workers or retirees through senior placement agencies and also turns to their own retirees when looking to fill a position. PHI is currently working toward formalizing a phased retirement program for workers and offers their pre- and 65+ retirees most of the same health benefits as current employees. The company offers flexible work arrangements and emphasizes cross-department/field training learning and development opportunities. Forty-eight percent of the company’s employees are 50 and older, with an average tenure of 26 years.

The Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA) emphasizes continued learning and development for its employees. Various tuition reimbursement, loan forgiveness programs, scholarships, training resources and training requirements result in a highly skilled workforce. Fifty percent of VHA employees are age 50+.

A separate hospitals and health care Best Employers honor roll was established by AARP for the first time this year. AARP decided to set up a separate category in order to acknowledge efforts in the health care field to creatively deal with shortages in qualified workers that have faced the health care industry for years.

Any U.S.-based employer with at least 50 employees is eligible to apply for the Best Employers award. Candidates are vetted to ensure that practices meet the needs of mature workers. Key areas of consideration include: recruiting practices, opportunities for training, education and career development; workplace accommodations; alternative work options, such as flexible scheduling, job sharing, and phased retirement; employee health and retirement benefits and retiree work opportunities

AARP The Magazine will feature the 2009 Best Employers in its November-December issue, available in homes September 24. The article will be found online then at www.aarpmagazine.org
