The United Way of St. Croix, in partnership with Clinical Laboratory, Inc., VI Cardiac Center and Pavia Information Center is holding a FREE Diabetes and Sickle Cell Health Screening event themed "Day of Action". The event will be held at the Virgin Islands Cardiac Center on Saturday, September 26, 2009, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sunday, September 27, 2009, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The screening will be provided for ALL ages (children, adults and seniors). According to the Virgin Islands Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, "9% to 12% of the USVI population, age 18 and older, has been diagnosed with diabetes, and approximately 4.1% of adult Virgin Islands residents have diabetes, but remain undiagnosed. Diabetes Mellitus is the 5th leading cause of death in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Individuals registering for FREE health screenings are reminded that they do not have to fast and can have breakfast beforebefore arriving for the exam. Families are encouraged to participate in this important screening event. Early detection of Diabetes and Sickle Cell is important and also treatable.
