AARP Praises Senator Schumer for Supporting Proposal to Crack Down on Health Care Fraud

ALBANY—AARP New York State Director Lois Aronstein released the following statement on today’s announcement by Senator Schumer regarding his support of new comprehensive health care fraud legislation that will significantly increase efforts to crack down on Medicaid and Medicare fraud.
“The skyrocketing costs of health care continue to erode the security, peace of mind, and pocketbooks of all Americans. Too much of that spending is lost to health care fraud. We simply cannot afford to pay for care that is never delivered and equipment that is not needed.
“AARP applauds Senator Schumer for his support of the Health Care Fraud Enforcement Act of 2009 which would dramatically increase funding to hire new fraud investigators and beef up penalties for convicted scam artists. This legislation will help stop the fraud and prosecute the criminals who are costing consumers and our public health programs billions of dollars each year.”
As a part of its Health Action Now campaign, AARP is fighting to strengthen and improve Medicare for the millions of Americans who depend on it. That effort includes cutting the billions of dollars lost annually to Medicare fraud, waste, and abuse.
