AARP Announces Voter Resources for the
Special Election in Congressional District 23

Guide Informs and Educates Voters in The North Country and Central New York

Watertown, NY - As part of a voter education initiative leading up to the Special Election for Congressional District 23 on November 3rd, AARP released a voter guide featuring the candidates’ own words on key campaign issues.  Key issues included in the 2009 AARP Voters’ Guide for New York Congressional District 23 include health care, transportation, Social Security and long-term care and age discrimination.

“The candidates in the November 3rd special election provided us with their answers to key issues that impact the lives of residents in their congressional district,” stated Marilyn Pinsky, AARP New York State President.  “We developed this guide to inform the public about where the candidates stand on issues that residents deal with on a day to day basis.  We want voters to make informed choices when they go to the polls.”

AARP is reminding voters of all ages to get out and vote.  All candidates were given the opportunity to answer questions about issues important to AARP members and their families.  Their answers were published unedited.

AARP regularly undertakes voter education efforts.  Americans age 50+ vote in greater proportion than any other age group and are a crucial voting block in state legislative races.  AARP’s efforts focus on informing and educating all voters as well as encouraging them to vote.  AARP is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, and does not endorse political candidates, or contribute money to political parties or political candidates’ campaigns.

A copy of the voter guide can be found at:  http://www.aarp.org/states/ny/articles/2009_ny_voter_guide.html
AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization that helps people 50+ have independence, choice and control in ways that are beneficial and affordable to them and society as a whole. AARP does not endorse candidates for public office or make contributions to either political campaigns or candidates. We produce AARP The Magazine, the definitive voice for 50+ Americans and the world’s largest-circulation magazine with over 35.5 million readers; AARP Bulletin, the go-to news source for AARP’s 40 million members and Americans 50+; AARP Segunda Juventud, the only bilingual U.S. publication dedicated exclusively to the 50+ Hispanic community; and our website, AARP.org. The Election

It is a bit late for this comment but I will post it anyway......

I think we have had enough of the attack ads from both sides. If I could, I would vote for none of the above. Once again we must choose the candidate that we believe will cause the least damage down the road.

I do not see how making scurilous accustaions at each other is going to help the country.
Both candidates talk about the why and the what, but neither of them talks in detail about the how....
I see no way at this time that any candidate can promise tax cuts in any form. I believe that what needs to be done is the closing of all the tax loopholes that the wealthy and large corporations use to avoid paying their fair share of the burden we all face in this country.
Raising taxes on the "rich" is no answer. The entire economiy is out of whack. Those who cheat the system are rewarded and those who deal honestly are penalized. This has to be brought to a close.
It is time to that we considered the value added tax. In that way everyone pays regardless of income level.
I also believe that the perpetrators of the "subprime mortgage market" should should be held responsible because they knowingly promoted something that they knew was inherently wrong. It was done strictly for the sake of greed and now the nation is paying for their excess. The people of the United States should not have to pay the bill for this fraud. We need to recoup the the profits that were made on this debacle.
Let those who created this problem rectify it. The people of the United States should not have to bear the burden of the greed of those who made millions in this financial disaster. I believe that the Ricco Statute could be applied to those who caused this mess.
I should have written this letter months ago. Unfortunately I was so fed up with the rhetoric that I stopped paying attention. As my mother used to say we need to stop all the political "HORSEMANUVERING" and work to save us
