ON HOUSE WAYS & MEANS BUDGET PROPOSAL, IMPACT ON SENIORS
Boston, MA, April 15, 2009– Today, the Massachusetts House of Representatives’ Committee on Ways & Means put forward a state budget proposal that will harm many, especially vulnerable older residents. While a host of programs serving the elder population saw significant cuts, AARP is particularly concerned with the almost 40% slash in funding for Prescription Advantage, the state’s pharmacy assistance program that helps 64,000 older and disabled persons afford the medicine that keeps them healthy and out of more expensive care. These individuals are already struggling due to emergency 9C cuts made to the program last fall; Prescription Advantage has already taken the biggest hit it can handle.
AARP knows these are not ordinary times. Painful decisions must be made. But we also know that the most vulnerable must be protected. AARP calls on our legislative leaders to use the full arsenal of tools available to them to solve this budget crisis, including consideration of revenue generating steps; we urge them to govern with compassion – not just an ax.
