BOSTON, MA, April 28, 2009 – Today, AARP Massachusetts called on its members throughout the commonwealth to contact House Ways and Means Chairman Charles Murphy and urge him to use some of the revenue generated as a result of a sales tax increase to restore funding to Prescription Advantage and Home Care.
The alert, titled, “How Should They Spend $900 Million?” follows:
Dear AARP Member:
Last night, the Massachusetts House of Representatives voted to increase the sales tax from 5% to 6.25%. If finalized, this action is estimated to bring an additional $900 million in revenues to the Commonwealth. So now is the time to let your representatives know how you want them to spend that money.
Funding for important programs like Prescription Advantage, the state sponsored pharmacy program for older residents and some younger persons with disabilities, and home care services was severely cut. This additional revenue could help restore funding for these critical programs and services.
Tomorrow, Representatives will vote on these budget recommendations.
ACTION STEP:
Please dial 1-800-575-7971 (toll-free). Once connected, urge House Ways and Means Chairman Charles Murphy to use some of the revenue generated as a result of this sales tax increase to restore the funding to Prescription Advantage and home care programs. Also, urge him to put long term care services for low income seniors back in Elder Affairs.
Thank you for your ongoing advocacy. Your action is making a difference.
Sincerely,
AARP Massachusetts
