AARP's SHAARP Session blog dispels common health reform myths

Throughout the debate on how to fix what’s broken about our health care system, AARP pledges to help you cut through the noise and find the facts about what health care reform means for you and your family.  When we see special interests using scare tactics, we’ll make sure you’re given the facts so you can make informed decisions about health care reform. Check out AARP’s blog this week, which is highlighting some of the most common myths being spread about health care reform and the facts that prove them wrong.

AARPFL says:

Dear ColonelReb: You asked who approved AARP's work on health reform. AARP's national board, which is entirely made up of volunteers, approved our initiative to urge enactment of meaningful health reform. You said in your post that AARP supports "this legislation." We're sorry, apparently you have gotten a wrong impression. Actually, AARP has not yet endorsed specific health-reform legislation.

However, make no mistake: We are working as hard as we can to urge our national leaders to enact common-sense health reform this year. We think reform is absolutely essential to making sure that you, and millions of other Americans age 50 , can get access to the care you need and that Medicare remains strong for many years to come. We are sorry you apparently disagree

Col: I agree with you. I don't think that more than 10 people in the House, or anyone at AARP has read the full 11oo pages of vague and disingenuous proposals in many areas of the proposed legislation. This is what the so called 'scare tactics' are addressing. The politicians that are pushing the current proposal(s) can not answer specific questions about changes and coverages because of the overall vagueness. Obama is not being honest about this proposed legislation and his minions in the mainstream media are just as bad with their lies and half-truths. What a mess

Col: AARP is a liberal left wing tree hugging organization and they supported this bill because Pelosi, Reid, and Obama support and proposed it. If Bush/ Cheney had proposed it they would have opposed it for the same reasons you give.

I don't know who is promoting the approval of the current health bill but as a AARP member, I vehemently oppose Aarp supporting this legislation. Has anyone at AARP read this bill? Does AARP approve of those on Medicare being subjected to counseling every 5 years? Cutting $500B from Medicare? Who approved this supporting this bill
