Life After Retirement

For most of us (me included) our main focus in life has been earning a living and supporting ourselves and families – then comes retirement. What now? We’re healthier and living longer than ever before. Some of us have a clear idea of what we’re going to do in retirement. However, for most of us that picture’s not so clear – retiring to play golf, make quilts or fish meets our need for leisure but not purpose. Studies have shown that to be happy and satisfied at any age we must be engaged in tasks that are challenging and productive. That is, tasks that use our skills and talents and that lead to beneficial outcomes. While we need some leisure, without challenge and engagement we gradually waste away physically and mentally. By the way, volunteering with AARP is a great way to meet those requirements.
For many years now, I’ve been consulting and coaching around a theme I call “How Do I Operate This Machine Called Me?” I’ve taken elements from that workshop to develop a workshop for retirees called “Life After Retirement”. In this workshop, I’ll help you create your purpose and answer the question, What do I do with the rest of my life? We’ll also explore your skills, activities you enjoy, the stages of change, developing resilience, developing critical thinking (so you’ll be less likely to be scammed), and action planning
If you’re interested in attending a workshop, would like to arrange one or have me speak on this topic for your AARP chapter or church, civic or community organization, contact Jeremiah Mora, AARP Program Coordinator at (303) 764-5986 or email at
