Winner is First Hispanic
Recipient of AARP Community Award in California
Pasadena, CA – Sam Thomas
of Pasadena, CA has been selected by AARP, the nonprofit
membership organization for people 50 and over, to receive
California’s 2008 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service,
the Association’s most prestigious and visible volunteer
award for community service. This award symbolizes that
individuals have the power and ability to make a difference in the
lives of others.
AARP California selected Sam
Thomas for his remarkable service and for the impact he’s
had on the lives of others and on his community. Thomas
brings a strong background in administration, advocacy and
charitable work to AARP’s Los Angeles Region, which
represents nearly 700,000 members. Serving as AARP’s
regional volunteer leader, Thomas has been actively engaged and
involved in the planned activities of the California office to
improve the lives of individuals age 50 and over.
In this leadership role, Thomas
has been a champion of advocacy and community service by
pressing forward key issues such as affordable healthcare,
financial security and consumers’ rights. He can
also be counted on to direct, train and mobilize AARP
volunteers, whether fighting for health care reform, visiting
elected officials or helping members utilize resources in the
community. Canvassing the region this election year,
Thomas has inspired numerous members to raise their voice
and push for health care and financial security as part of
AARP’s Divided We Fail initiative (
www.dividedwefail.org
). As a
result, scores of members have pledged to vote for the
candidate who’ll address their issues and work together in
Congress to find solutions.
Thomas is an accomplished
non-profit executive who has dedicated his life to serving
others. He’s also served on numerous commissions and
boards, including the City of Pasadena Senior Commission, Pasadena
City College Oversight Board and the State of California
Department of Development Disabilities.
The AARP Andrus Award for
Community Service recognizes members and volunteers who, through
volunteer service, are significantly enhancing the lives of
individuals age 50 and over. The award will be formally presented
to Sam Thomas at a luncheon on ….

prospective members, improve the community in or for which the
work was performed, and inspire others to volunteer.
