Arkansas AARP volunteers and staff spent two days spreading the Divided We Fail (DWF) message at the Little Rock Marathon’s Health and Fitness Expo, which preceded the March 2 marathon. Divided We Fail is an initiative to demand action, answers and accountability from
elected leaders on the issues of health care reform and lifetime financial
security. Arkansas is part of AARP’s nationwide pledge gathering effort,
in which voters pledge to consider the candidates’ positions on these
issues when they vote. “This seemed to be a great opportunity to take DWF to people we might otherwise not meet, while at the same time encouraging healthy behaviors,” said AARP Arkansas State Director Maria Reynolds-Diaz. More than 500 DWF voter pledges were received and plans are already underway to expand outreach efforts at next year’s marathon.
Several enthusiastic AARP members and staff from Arkansas and Texas were among the Classic Rockers who finished the last mile of the marathon course in red t-shirts, carrying Divided We Fail signs and banners.
As a marathon sponsor, AARP also led a relay team consisting of staff members from Arkansas, Texas and Tennessee to finish in a strong fourth place, among 127 relay teams, in the corporate division of the marathon. The AARP relay team ran the marathon in 3 hours and 51 minutes. Mark Narvaez, associate state director of community outreach, Texas; Patrick Willard, associate state director of advocacy, Tennessee; and Sam Sellers, associate state director for advocacy, Arkansas, were the relay runners.
