I’m lucky enough to have odd and end pages of love letters that my parents wrote to each other. They’re fragile now. The paper is yellowed and creased. They were all written on the writing tablets available in 1926. A couple are in ink but most are written in pencil.
My mother letters are postmarked Humboldt, Tennessee which was in Humphreys County. My fathers are postmarked Goodrich, Tennessee which was here in Hickman County. These two towns are now just a memory of the past that existed. Humphreys and Hickman counties are neighboring counties and in these days it doesn’t take long to commute from one to the other but in 1926, I’m sure it was difficult for these two love birds to get together.
For me to share the exact wording in these letters I feel would be a betrayal to my parents. However, I do feel comfortable sharing a couple of the little poems that were a part of their letters.
You I love and will forever
You may change but I will never.
Time may come for us to part
But Dear, time will never change my heart.
Cora Lee Buchanan - date unknown
Remember me at morning.
Remember me at night.
Remember me dear darling
and don’t forget to write.
