When Winter gets Here

Here it is the first of July and I am thinking winter.  I live alone now and wondering if I should get a dog.  This is a big decision for me and I think about it a lot.  My friend used to raise German Shepherds with her husband.  They would show these dogs and she still raises the pups until they go to their owners.  She has been very persuasive and would give me one of the pups when they are ready to leave the nest.  I think the thing that bothers me most is getting too attached to the dog. I know how that feels. The company sure would be nice.      I don't know, should I or shouldn't I????

We have a pair of hybrid wolfdogs, which I would not reccomend unless you have a lot of time and patience. They are beautful and amazingly clever when it comes to escaping the yard. We have a housecat too and I would vote for a cat over a dog. Our Sockeye is nine years old and his breed is called Mainecoon. Although they are not from the Raccoon family his tail is ringed and he has longer back legs than his front legs and he is huge! But lhe is loveable, definitely good company. Get a cat

How kind of your friend to offer you a puppy! But while you are thinking of all the positives and negatives you might remember that German Shepherd pups grow to be BIG beautiful dogs. We always had big dogs when the kids were growing up and enjoyed them very much. We now share our home with one daughter and her husband and son. The grandson has a BIG dog, she is half Mastiff which means HUGE!!! I find myself guarding every time this massive puppy comes racing toward me. She doesn't scare me but I'm not very big and she could knock me over in a second. She doesn't realize her strength and size and loves to play but I'm no match for her. I can't even imagine trying to take her for a walk. Anyway...I'm sure you'll make the perfect decision for yourself and your circumstances but I just had to throw in my two cents worth. Good luck!

Hi Betty,

Want to say that you surely will get attached to your pup or any other pet. I've had dogs, cats, birds, and a couple of rabbits and they become part of my family.

At this time, I have my small white male mini-lop for 8 years. He's the most adorable little house pet and the love of my life. Rabbits can be rather independent, they eat veggies, don't bark, don't jump up on tables and eat the butter!

They are very entertaining and run and jump on top and under couches. They adapt well to litter box training, immediately, and they can live a long time. Sometimes, my bunny will nibble at my ankles and lick my fingers, affectionately. By now we greet each other in the morning and say Goodnight!

How about getting used to the idea of having a pet around? There are Pet Adoption agencies that need people who can have a pet live-in for a short stay. Some of the variety of choices are all those I mentioned above.

If you're THINKING about having a pet then you are probably ready. God bless you in your decision.

dear Betty, we (my granddaughter and I) have a chihuahua. He's not only company but very entertaining. They are a lot of work. Especially if they live in doors. They are also expensive. But to us it is worth it and love him very much. German Shepards are good dogs to have even around children. If you have time and money then go for it. The reward is gratifying.
