Employment (Part Time or Full Time) for seniors and/or early retirees, based upon personal experiences and in my opinion, is rather difficult, if not dam near and/or absolutely impossible to find, in many areas of this country.

Despite what any Rosy Red eye glass wearing employment consultants, individuals and department of unemployment (Human Resources) agency representatives tell you...(saying all the positives and encouraging words you want to hear)...seniors obtaining employment is very difficult, if not dam near totally impossible.

As the saying goes, "The Truth Always Hurts." The real truth of the matter is, finding work when you’re 55+ years of age isn’t easy! Easy for Human Resource people and everyone else, including family members and friends, to tell you or say to you. They’re job is to encourage you and tell you work is available for you. Reminder Note: They’re all employed.

Use Caution: if you're considering hiring any Head Hunters and/or any professional resume writers. These two can be expensive and a nightmare. Possibly and potentially your worst investment in yourself when seeking employment. If you can’t get a job on your own, then it likely cannot be done. Self reliance is your best investment in yourself. Reinventing yourself to fit into todays job market is required.

Find what you do best or enjoy doing best. Then explore it’s needs in the job market and/or private sector. Fill a need for someone else and you’ve likely found your niche market. Fill that void or do that work for someone else better then the rest and you’ve found your calling or niche market. Market your skills and talents. The rest will all fall into place after wards.

Sincerely and Good Luck.

Tom

My experience is pretty much the same as yours on job finding. I taught classes at a local community college for awhile, but they wouldn't offer me a full time teaching position...preferring to offer me one or two classes and pay me $25 an hour. Then sending me out at night to teach around the area. I got tired of that after awhile and decided that it wasn't worth it. Retired at 62 and stopped looking. Now, I do what I please and don't worry about it. Don't feel guilty. It is just time to stop and take care of your self for a change. Lion

If you visit monster.com, you can read post after post in the forums about people chasing paper in the hope of any employment. There are few jobs in any of the technologies, & those jobs don't pay a living wage (& yes, you're stuck w/the student loan). Visit a local reemployment center; you'll interview skilled, intelligent, experienced, talented unemployees! How does anyone convince his/her child to study for any career (a coworker's lament)? Schools misrepresent the disciplines; schools have overhead that requires a certain number of students. Name any career. If benefits are available, companies won't hire "seniors" because that would increase their health insurance rates. A former coworker now works three jobs to support herself. I've been looking for a second part time job for two years +, & I continue to train in office technologies since those skills seem universal. Maybe it's a bank conspiracy, to keep the entire population living on credit card debt? Ms. Phyllis

I can relate with you about the job hunting. I'm only 51 and re-trained in IT so I might be able to get a decent job to find that they don't really want to pay any more than the typical CSR jobs I had before I re-trained. So, now I have a huge school loan that I will never be able to pay off because I can't get a job that pays enough to do so. Besides, everything has been either outsources to another country or they would rather hire rotating temps so they don't have to pay benefits. Between those to things alone it cuts down the number of permanant /or full time jobs available by about 80%.
Enough complaining, just wanted to say hi and thanks for adding me as your friend. :)
