The site's "Doctor Finder" lets you check out basic information about physicians from the American Board of Medical Specialists' "Directory of Board Certified Medical Specialists." The info is free, but it's not going to reveal any skeletons.

Federation of State Medical Boards
Click on "State Medical Board Info" to get contact information for your state's board. Also, FSMB offers reports of disciplinary action from state medical board records. The cost: $9.95 per physician. You can search the database online via credit-card payment, or you can mail in a search request.

Public Citizen's Health Research Group
This group maintains a database of "20,125 Questionable Doctors." A regional edition costs $20, plus shipping. The database includes actions taken against doctors by Medicare and other federal agencies, as well as state boards.

Consumer's Checkbook: Links to State Boards
Published by the nonprofit Center for the Study of Services, the site provides links to 24 states that offer physician disciplinary information. That way, you can do your own search of state recordsoften for free. The site also maintains a database of nearly 15,000 "Top Doctors." Two-year access to the database costs $19.95.
