I Love Lucy debuts on CBS. It would win the Nielsen ratings race four of its six years on the air.

1969: Some 2 million Americans, many wearing black armbands, stay away from work and school to take part in demonstrations as part of the Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam.

1860: Grace Bedell, an 11-year-old from upstate New York, writes to presidential candidate Abe Lincoln, imploring him to grow a beard. He does.
