Comet Hale-Bopp graces the desert skies of Joshua Tree National Park

JULY 23, 1995

Alan Hale, a New Mexico astronomer, and Thomas Bopp, an amateur stargazer in Arizona, each notice a comet. Comet Hale-Bopp, as their discovery comes to be known, later becomes visible to the naked eye for a record 18 months.
