OCTOBER 8, 1958

Swedish cardiologist Ake Senning implants the first-ever internal heart pacemaker.

2004: Martha Stewart reports to a federal minimum-security prison in Alderson, W.Va., to start serving a five-month sentence for lying to investigators about stock market trading.

1967: Bolivian Special Forces wound and capture Argentine-born revolutionary Che Guevara, who is executed the next day. He was 39.
