1827: Joanna Bethune and Hannah L. Murray open the first nursery school in the United States, in New York City. The school accommodates about 500 children of working mothers in its first two years, with the goal "to relieve parents of the laboring classes from the care of their children ... offering the children protection from weather, from idleness and contamination of evil example."
1934: The murderous yet charismatic bank-robbing couple Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow are shot to death in a stolen Ford V8 by police in an ambush in Bienville Parish, La.
1960: Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion announces the capture of Nazi SS official Adolf Eichmann, architect of the Holocaust's "final solution," by Israeli Mossad agents. Eichmann had been living under the assumed name of Ricardo Klement in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He would be convicted of crimes against humanity and executed in 1962.
