NRTA Community Service Initiatives

NRTA Community Outreach and Service

This program offers opportunities to serve populations of all ages. NRTA members design unique projects and collaborate with local organizations to provide support to older adults and other individuals in need. In partnership with AARP, many individuals leverage their background in education and serve as instructors in driver safety courses or assist low and middle income families with tax counseling.

NRTA With Our Youth!

The NRTA With Our Youth! program provides opportunities for retired educators and youth to work together to address the needs of youth and the broader community. State and local retired educators association volunteer leaders use the resources provided by NRTA to organize local self-sustaining direct service projects for and with youth.

NRTA made a three-year pledge at the 1997 President’s Summit for America’s Future held in Philadelphia, to serve 1.5 million youth in 2,000 communities with a total of 45 million service hours through its affiliated state retired educators’ associations (REAs). The goal was met and exceeded. The program provides five key resources for youth:

  • an on-going relationship with a caring adult
  • a healthy start in life
  • safe places to learn and grow
  • a marketable skill upon graduation
  • an opportunity to serve in their communities

Because our members and associations believe in the tremendous potential of youth to be a positive force in our society today, we have dedicated ourselves to ensure that youth have the five key resources to be productive members of their communities.

State and local REAs continue to serve over 500,000 youth in more than 1,000 communities annually.

How to Become a With Our Youth! Volunteer

NRTA can provide you with the contact for your state retired educators association so that you can work with other retired educators in the program. Since there is not an NRTA With Our Youth! program in every community, those interested in becoming an individual volunteer with the program should contact NRTA directly.
