Answers to Consumer Issues Questions

Q: How can I get telemarketers to stop calling me at home?
A: Contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and have your phone number placed on their National Do Not Call Registry. You can register your name online on the FTC Web site or call 1-888-382-1222.

Q: What is a Reverse Mortgage?
A: A reverse mortgage is a loan against your home that you do not have to pay back for as long as you live in your home. For more, visit the AARP Reverse Mortgage Web site.

Q: Does AARP produce information about caregiving?
A: Yes. Visit our Caregiving Web site.

Q: What is AARP doing about predatory lending?
A: AARP has been working to promote consumer protections against predatory lending at both the federal and state levels, and has been involved in several lawsuits to protect older homeowners who have been victimized by these practices. For additional information and resources, please visit AARP's Financing Homes and Fixing Homes web pages.

Q: How do I obtain information about a Personal Emergency Response System (PERS)?
A: The Federal Trade Commission publishes a report with general information about how a PERS works and what to consider when shopping for one. For more details, visit the FTC Web site or call 1-877-382-4357.

Q: What should I look for in a living trust?
A: Please be aware that AARP does not endorse any living trust product or company. You may be interested in reviewing our publication “The Truth About Living Trusts” (D18113), which explains the differences between wills and living trusts and discusses how you can begin to decide what is appropriate for you. To order online, send an email to Member@AARP.org. Be sure to include the publication title, stock number, and your complete name and mailing address.
