AARP Launches On-Line Savings Challenge: Don’t Pay Full Price for Anything

“Ultimate Cheapskate” Jeff Yeager offers prizes and money-saving strategies in month-long series.

WASHINGTON, October 3, 2011 – As part of its continuing work to help Americans age 50+ save money on everyday expenses, AARP today launched an on-line savings challenge encouraging web users to pay less than full price for everything they buy in October. Jeff Yeager, author of The Cheapskate Next Door and The Ultimate Cheapskate’s Road Map to True Riches, will lead participants in discussions, tips and tactics, and weekly contests.

“We’re challenging users to get really creative and find ways to pay less than full price on everything they buy this month,” said Yeager. “Of course, we’re not suggesting they short the mortgage or car payment, but on almost everything else, see if you can get it cheaper, or even free.”

Strategies to save money on groceries, restaurants, fall and holiday shopping, well-timed sales, and more will be discussed in editorial postings and on-line community forums. Topics will include:

* Using coupons wisely.
* Fixed expenses – are they really fixed?
* Finding real deals at outlet malls.
* Free stuff on the internet.
* Cheapskate etiquette.

Participants will be invited to share their best deals, and can win prizes in weekly contests. For example, in honor of National Dessert Day on October 14, a prize will be awarded for the best thrifty-but-delicious dessert submission. After the challenge ends on October 30, three overall winners will be rewarded for their participation, creativity, and savings.

“More and more today, smart shoppers are stretching their dollars, and learning that they can have fun being frugal,” said Yeager. “By offering resources, a sense of community, and even a little extra incentive to save, the AARP Savings Challenge can help.”

The AARP Savings Challenge begins today at www.aarp.org/savingschallenge.

Contest rules are available by visiting http://www.aarp.org/money/budgeting-saving/info-09-2010/savings_challenge_rules.html or going to www.aarp.org/savingschallenge and clicking on “Savings Challenge Rules.”
