Hundreds to Volunteer in Atlanta for AARP Community Day of Service
AARP Ambassadors Dan Marino, James “JB” Brown, Dr. Pepper Schwartz, NFL Quarterback Steve Bartkowski Kick-Off Event Supporting Over a Dozen Volunteer Projects Across City

WASHINGTON – AARP today announced it plans to host an “Atlanta Community Day of Service,” a large scale volunteer day with hundreds of volunteers to kick-off AARP’s annual National Event & Expo,Life@50+.  In this effort to give back to local communities through various activities throughout the city, AARP Ambassadors Dan MarinoJames “JB” Brown and Dr. Pepper Schwartz, along with former NFL quarterback Steve Bartkowski, will lead a rally for volunteers before they head out to work on projects around the city.  The rally will commence at 8:00am on Thursday, October 3rd in the Community Day of Service Kick Off Room (Room B405) at the Georgia World Congress Center.

“The Atlanta Community Day of Service offers members and others the chance to live the AARP motto through service,” said Barry Reid, AARP Georgia’s volunteer State President.  “Giving back to the people and communities of Atlanta enriches the lives of both those in need and those who are volunteering, and we look forward to all of the opportunities to serve.”

During the Atlanta Community Day of Service, volunteers have the opportunity to participate in a variety of projects and leave a positive mark on the city of Atlanta and its citizens. These projects include supporting the redevelopment of the city through building, home and school refurbishing, construction of community gardens, senior community center revitalization, art projects and more. Sponsors of the Atlanta Community Day of Service include Allstate, The Hartford, New York Life, AARP Foundation, Drive to End Hunger, and MentorUp.  United Healthcare will also provide volunteers. Volunteer project locations include:

  • Atlanta Community Food Bank
  • Atlanta Community Gardens
  • Books for Africa
  • Clean the World – Convention Center
  • Carver Boys and Girls Club
  • DeKalb Senior Center (Includes  10 TEK Volunteers)
  • Kirkwood Urban Forest
  • MedShare International
  • Quality Care for Children – Little House of Love Learning Center
  • Salvation Army - Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center
  • Salvation Army – Warehouse
  • Salvation Army – Red Shield Shelter
  • Salvation Army – Peachcrest Boys and Girls Club
  • Hosea Feed the Hungry

In addition to the Community Day of Service on Thursday, AARP Foundation will host a meal-packing activity sponsored by CHASE Card Services on Saturday, October 5th at the Georgia World Congress Center.

Volunteer Registration

Volunteer opportunities are open to everyone. Those wishing to participate can register online athttp://aarpevents.org/atlanta through Monday, September 27th.  Volunteer registration will be open onsite at Life@50+ beginning Tuesday, October 1st from 2:00 – 6:00pm.

Life@50+
AARP’s Atlanta Community Day of Service is a part of Life@50+, the organization’s National Event & Expo focused on the 50+ audience which will continue on October 3rd through October 5th at the Georgia World Congress Center. Featuring entertainment, celebrities, experts and exhibits, Life@50+ brings some of today’s most renowned faces and companies directly to AARP members. Admission to Life@50+ for AARP members is $25, $35 for non-members or $299 for those who wish to take advantage of a special “Digital Registration” package that includes an iPad Mini. The entry fee includes access to the Exhibit Floor, Exhibit Floor Performance Stage, the opening show, educational sessions and the volunteer activities.
