AARP Foundation Establishes Relief Fund for Older Victims of Louisiana Floods
AARP to match dollar for dollar contributions up to $500,000 to provide much needed support for disaster victims

Washington, DC –AARP Foundation President Lisa Marsh Ryerson today announced that AARP Foundation has created a relief fund to help the victims – especially those over 50 – of the historic flooding that ravaged Louisiana. AARP will match contributions, dollar for dollar, up to $250,000 for the fund, which will provide relief and recovery support to victims. Due to the overwhelming response and generosity of our members and donors, AARP Foundation has increased the match by an additional $250,000 – which brings the combined match total to $500,000.

“The devastation in Louisiana is heartbreaking, and many older adults who already struggle to make ends meet now find themselves facing a multitude of additional hurdles,” said Ryerson. “AARP members always respond quickly to help those in need, and we know they will again. As a trusted organization we also know that every dollar counts and will ensure that donations collected through the disaster relief fund will go directly to aid victims, through organizations working on the ground in Louisiana.”

Historic flooding in Louisiana killed 13 people and damaged 40,000 homes, making it the worst natural disaster to strike the United States since Hurricane Sandy. Those who choose to give to AARP Foundation to support victims in the severely affected flood-stricken parishes can do so through AARP Foundation’s secure website, where 100 percent of their tax-deductible donations will be used to help the victims of this disaster.
