AARP Foundation Seeks to Improve Access to Safe and Affordable Housing for the Struggling 50+ Population

Foundation Announces First Housing Grants Program

AARP Foundation today announced their first housing grant program by issuing a formal request for proposal (RFP), targeted at identifying organizations that create better access to housing for the struggling 50+ population, by ensuring they are able to maintain their current homes as safe places to live and age.  AARP Foundation is encouraging organizations to create new models of home modification that benefit households of older Americans who are affected by unaffordable and/or inadequate housing.

Grants will be awarded through a competitive RFP method to qualified organizations in the U.S., including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands, with a demonstrated track record of providing home-repair assistance to households on a nationwide or large regional level.

Total grant amounts distributed by AARP Foundation’s Office of Grants Administration across all four Impact Areas will be in excess of $1 million. The awardees specific to the housing grant opportunity will be announced in December 2012.  There are two components to the submission process: a letter of inquiry and a grant proposal.  Only those organizations invited to submit a full proposal may do so. Important to note, the submission of a proposal does not guarantee funding.

“As Americans age, the need for safe and affordable housing options becomes even more critical,” says AARP Foundation President Jo Ann Jenkins.  “High housing costs, aging homes, and costly repairs can greatly impact those with limited incomes.  Our housing grants program will support organizations that work to alleviate the affects of the housing crisis for people 50 and older.”

 Organizations interested in submitting a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) may do so online at: www.aarp.org/foundationgrants.

Questions regarding the Housing Grant Program can be emailed to FoundationGrants@aarp.org.

* Important Dates:

- Letter of Inquiry Deadline: August 17, 2012

- Decision Notification Deadline for LOI Applicants: August 24, 2012

- RFP Deadline for organizations invited to submit a full proposal: September 21, 2012

- Awards Announced: December 2012
