Going Overboard

On Friday, May 9, local Boston vocal group Overboard led the opening of Life@50+ Boston with their high-powered, soul-infused rendition of our national anthem.

After the opening show, attendees ventured out onto the Life@50+ exhibit floor at the Boston Convention & Exhibit Center. There, they engaged with exhibitors along with AARP representatives offering products and services to help them live their best life.

The Secrets of Success

In one of the first Life@50+ sessions, AARP Chief Operating Officer Jo Ann Jenkins (right) led a panel of successful women to discuss the challenges posed by gender discrimination, age bias or self-doubt and how to overcome them. The panel included a business owner, a nonprofit executive, a Girl Scouts representative and AARP Board Chair Gail Aldrich (center).

Voting on the Cutting Edge

At 11 a.m. on Friday, cutting-edge health and wellness start-up companies took the stage and pitched the most innovative new products and services for the 50-plus community at the Health Innovation@50+ LivePitch. Life@50+ attendees were able to rate each company after making its pitch. At the end of the day, a Judges’ Winner and AARP Consumer Winner were announced.

Discovering the Healthy Delicious

James Beard Cookbook Hall of Fame inductee Mollie Katzen showed attendees how to make healthy home cooking fun with images of her beautiful and accessible recipes. She also provided practical tips on replicating these meals at home.

Running out of money during retirement rises to the top of most Americans’ financial worry lists. Author and personal finance expert Jean Chatzky shared “money rules” to help attendees carve out a life that’s not only secure, but also fun and fulfilling.

TEK Savvy

Throughout Life@50+ Boston, AARP TEK (Technology, Education, Knowledge) helped attendees make the most out of their personal technology devices and services. Classes covered how to use tablets and smartphones, staying connected with apps and social media, and demonstrations of emerging technologies.

Rise and Shine

What better way to start the day at Life@50+ than with some exercise to get the blood pumping. Bright and early on Saturday, nationally certified fitness professional Ali Baldassare led the morning fitness session. Attendees enjoyed a Zumba class focused on core fitness which promotes pelvic and bladder health, sponsored by National Association for Continence.

Saturday, May 10, was kicked off by multi-award winner Whoopi Goldberg engaged in conversation with legendary talk show host and comedian Jay Leno. The audience was delighted by stories of their lives and careers with lots of laughs all around.

Name That Song

On Saturday, May 10, Emilio Estefan, AARP Life Reimagined Ambassador, and Lorraine Cortes-Vazquez, executive vice president for AARP Multicultural Markets and Engagement (left), played "Name That Song" where a lucky few contestants from the audience got to test their knowledge of songs from Gloria Estefan and the many amazing artists Emilio has mentored.

AARP Travel Ambassador Samantha Brown took the audience through the new AARP Travel Experience and shared some of her favorite stories from her life on the road. With 14 years of nonstop travel, she offered her best travel advice and favorite tips and answered travel questions from the audience.
