Community Day of Service
AARP once again hosted a large-scale voluntourism project as the kick-off to the Life@50+ National Event and Expo in Boston. Volunteers enjoyed a day of service as we spread out across Beantown to leave a lasting legacy in this historic city.
On Thursday, May 8, 2014, hundreds of AARP volunteers assembled in groups and were transported into neighborhoods of need in Boston. They also participated in various projects inside the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Each neighborhood featured a variety of work opportunities — activities that supported the cultivation of the community: home and school refurbishing, landscaping, mentoring, green projects, construction of community gardens and senior community center revitalization.
In addition to the Community Day of Service on Thursday, AARP Foundation hosted a three-day meal-packing activity, Thursday through Saturday, on the exhibit floor of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. All meals packed were donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank for distribution to organizations across the Greater Boston area.
There was something for people of every ability — low-impact to high-impact activities — and at the end of our day, we left behind a positive and historic mark on the city of Boston and its residents. We offered half-day opportunities, and all supplies, transportation and project leadership were provided.
