Sweet Honey in the Rock® is a vocal quintet that has been entertaining audiences for 40 years. The five female performers sing a cappella, selecting blues, African, jazz, gospel and R&B music. Sweet Honey was founded in 1973 at the D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company by Dr. Bernice Johnson who retired from the group in 2004. Its current line-up features returning original members Carol Maillard and Louise Robinson, joined by “long-timers” Ysaye Barnwell, Nitanju Bolade Casel and Aisha Kahlil. On-stage sign-language interpretation is provided by Shirley Childress. The group has toured from Australia to Zimbabwe, performed in the White House at the request of President Obama and established itself as an inspiring, empowering musical force worldwide.
