On Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, hundreds of AARP volunteers assembled in groups and were transported into neighborhoods of need in and around the Big Easy. Each neighborhood featured a variety of work opportunities – activities that supported the redevelopment of New Orleans: building, home refurbishing, landscaping, mentoring, green projects, construction of community gardens – the list goes on.
There was something for people of every ability – low impact to high impact activities – and at the end of our day, we left behind a positive and historic mark on the city of New Orleans and its residents. Available were full-day and half-day opportunities, and all supplies, transportation and project leadership were provided. Also available were indoor activities such as hunger programs, packaging supplies, mentoring, art projects and senior center activities.
