
Cicely Tyson is renowned for her portrayals of strong female characters on stage, screen and television. She became the first woman of color to co-star in a TV drama series, East Side/West Side, and to appear regularly on a daytime soap opera, Guiding Light. Tyson won two Emmy Awards for The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. She also won an Emmy for the TV film, The Oldest Confederate Widow Tells All. Recently, she starred as Constantine Jefferson in The Help.
Tyson advocates for children in need in Africa and encourages creative expression through a school of performing and fine arts in East Orange, N.J.
