Whoopi Goldberg is a versatile, award-winning film, television and stage actor who has been performing since age eight. Goldberg's big break came when director Mike Nichols presented her original, solo Broadway show. The companion album won the 1985 Grammy for Best Comedy Recording. Goldberg was then cast in the film version of The Color Purple. The performance earned her a Golden Globe Award, an NAACP Image Award and an Oscar nomination. Later films included Ghost, Sister Act and The Long Walk Home.
In 2002, Goldberg became one of a very elite group of artists who has won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, a Tony Award and an Emmy Award. She is the author of nine books and is an accomplished producer in television, film and the stage. Goldberg has hosted the Grammy and Academy Award shows and appeared on a variety of TV shows; she currently co-hosts the ABC Emmy Award-winning television show, The View. She is a tireless advocate for children, the homeless, human rights and the battle against AIDS.
