AARP Applauds Congressional Passage of Increased 2006 Funding for LIHEAP

AARP Director of Advocacy David Sloane said the following about final passage of increased LIHEAP funding for 2006:
AARP applauds Congress for increasing funds to help low income people meet this year’s unaffordable heating costs.
Members of Congress averted personal catastrophe for many older Americans and people with disabilities because they courageously voted to do the right thing. With healthcare, food and other necessities already competing for their limited resources, low income Americans faced impossible choices when heating and cooling costs exploded.
We congratulate the members of Congress for their courage to change funding plans for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) in the face of this painful reality.
