AARP Statement on the Proposed Appointment of Ray LaHood as Transportation Secretary

AARP Executive Vice President for Social Impact Nancy LeaMond said the following in reaction to President Elect Obama’s selection of Ray LaHood to be his Secretary of Transportation:

The naming of former House Member Ray LaHood as Secretary of Transportation Designee signals a welcome bipartisan approach to one of the major challenges of the next decade. Known for his openness to contributions from all sides, LaHood has the opportunity to preside over a transformation of America’s transportation system.

The concurrent economic crisis, aging of America’s infrastructure and graying of its population offers a once-in-a-generation chance to refocus transportation policy to not only rebuild America’s roads and bridges, but to advance community livability.

In 2030 nearly 71 million people will have reached age 65+, doubling the retirement age population since 2000. The upcoming transportation authorization can help the nation prepare both for its graying years and a greener future by making roads safer for drivers of all ages and also offering more user friendly options for pedestrians, transit users and cyclists.

AARP looks forward to working with Secretary Designee LaHood after his confirmation to meet the challenges of the reauthorization of the transportation legislation.
