Washington, D.C. – AARP applauded the U.S. House for its passage of the American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which will provide some much-needed relief to older Americans and people of all generations.
In response to the passage of H.R. 1, AARP Executive Vice President, Nancy LeaMond issued the following statement.
“Congress is poised to offer relief to Americans of all ages today in their first action towards completing an economic recovery package. AARP believes the House’s action to extend unemployment benefits, provide assistance to states to protect health care for the most vulnerable, increase food stamps, and reform health care through health information technology and comparative effectiveness research, will help improve our ailing economy.
“The nation is facing a critical moment – economic crises, a lagging health care system and more. As we know, real solutions that benefit all Americans are not easy to achieve, however, our elected officials need to be able to work across party lines to make this happen. It is AARP’s hope that as Congress moves this important legislation across the finish line, both Democrats and Republicans will have agreed upon the most effective ways to bring real relief to all Americans.
“AARP looks forward to working with Congress to make further refinements to the legislation, including strengthening the Medicaid provision to protect home-and community-based services and providing seniors with a much-needed economic relief payment.”
