Washington, DC - As the economy continues to sputter, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke today recommended that Congress act to pass a second stimulus package that would provide direct financial relief for struggling Americans. In light of this welcome endorsement for Congressional action, AARP Senior Vice President for Government Relations and Advocacy David Sloane offered the following statement:

“AARP joins Chairman Bernanke in calling on Congress to take decisive action to provide financial relief to those who are most in need. Despite previous Congressional action, millions of Americans are still struggling to make ends meet each day. As the financial sector continues to receive economic assistance, new actions should be taken before the end of the year to ensure that homeowners, families, and those saving for retirement are not left out of financial rescue efforts.”

“Just this month, more than 800,000 jobless workers will have exhausted their unemployment insurance benefits. Without an extension of benefits, Americans who continue to look for work but have been unable to find employment will be faced with a stark economic reality. In addition, as more states face severe budget shortfalls, far too often health care for people who cannot afford care on their own is one of the first areas to be cut. In this time of economic downturn, it is imperative that we do all we can to shore up access to health care for our most vulnerable populations.”

“With the election just weeks away, politics dominates the headlines. But what America needs is bi-partisan action to provide real economic relief to Main Street. We urge Congress to return to work after the election to pass a second stimulus package. A package that will extend unemployment benefits, support state funding for Medicaid, stem the tide of foreclosures and restore a level of confidence in saving for retirement. Americans cannot afford to wait until next year for solutions to the economic woes they are facing today.”
