Welcome to Live & Learn Online,
NRTA: AARP’s Educator Community is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the With Our Youth! program by continuing to recognize outstanding volunteer work with youth by individuals and groups of retired educators across the country. This year, seven retired educator associations and individuals receive With Our Youth! Excellence awards from NRTA:
• The Virginia Retired Teachers Association was honored for their statewide school project in which volunteers logged 23,209 hours of service to 27,329 youth on a variety of project including mentoring and tutoring.
• Educators in Conecuh County Alabama were recognized for their work to provide financial literacy training to middle and high school students in rural Alabama.
• The Trumbull Chapter of Ohio’s Retired Teachers Association was recognized for providing an educational program raising awareness about the area’s role in the anti-slavery movement.
• Washington’s Sno-Isle Unit #22 School Retirees were recognized for providing a multigenerational educational outreach program in honor of Veterans Day.
• Arizona’s Nancy Frank was recognized for her 19 years of volunteer work mentoring youth and helping them with reading skills after her 35 year teaching career.
• Michigan’s MaryAnn Moore was honored for her volunteer service to her community as a lighthouse keeper but also as an inspiration and teacher to future generations.
• Washington’s Carol Payne was honored for being a volunteer art teacher in remote part of the state, teaching the students about famous artists and leading them to create their own art.
To learn more about these award-winning individuals and groups, please see the 2009 NRTA With Our Youth! Awards. (hot link).
The winners of the NRTA With Our Youth! Excellence awards have made a major impact on multiple generations. They show that retired educators never stop teaching and giving back. It is only fitting that these extraordinary volunteers receive national recognition.
Since 1999, the NRTA With Our Youth! program has reached more than 2.5 million young people in more than 42 states. Each year awards are given in three categories: statewide retired educator association projects, local retired educator association unit/chapter projects, and individual efforts.
