The final day of Vegas@50+ started with a ballroom dance workout, continued with impassioned sessions on the role of TV in social change, and was capped off by a larger-than-life performance by Faith Hill. In-between, Vegas@50+ featured health care reform news, cancer studies, financial advice, fitness, and of course, treats and diversions on the exhibit floor. But just wait until next year. Find out who's joining the fun at Orlando@50+, Sept. 30—Oct. 2, 2010.
At an elegant evening of "recognition and celebration" at Vegas@50+, AARP received an Emmy, and in turn bestowed the organization's prestigious Andrus Award on TV writer and producer Norman Lear. Both awards spoke to the contributions people have made through television to social activism and change.
AARP Fitness Ambassador Martina Navratilova kicked off day two of AARP's Vegas@50+ Member Event with a morning workout to remember. AARP members learned how to navigate Facebook, spice up their sex lives and make music with new-found friends.
Day One of the AARP National Event & Expo in Las Vegas opened with a flood of AARP members rushing in to find more than a dozen types of collectible, commemorative pins. Other folks went for free massages, health care screenings, and caricatures. Eager attendees navigated the booths while filling their totes with mounds of coveted tchotchkes—keychains, magnets, and candy, to start—handed out by exhibitors.
The day's program exuberantly mixed business and pleasure. Attendees learned and experienced everything from financial advice to mimes, a health care reform discussion (featuring Valerie Jarrett of the White House), a fashion show, tips on living longer, and of course, the collectible pins. People lined up early for a look at the "Golden Age of Television" with Garry Marshall, Penny Marshall, George Takei, and John Amos.
Designer Carmen Marc Valvo channeled the Rolling Stones during a fashion show, and sports commentator James "JB" Brown, AARP’s Community Ambassador, took up Valvo's subject matter, joking about wearing Spanx. (How would he know?) Last but not least, Los Angeles Lakers great Magic Johnson received his AARP card.
At the Day of Play, AARP members fulfilled their need for speed at the Richard Petty Experience, taking three laps around a real NASCAR track in a real racecar going more than 150 mph. Other AARP members hit the links at Angel Park Golf Club.
