Through most of her distinguished reporting career, Sheilah Kast has focused on the economy and workplace and how they affect people's lives. Well known to viewers of public television, ABC News, and CNN, she has covered the White House and Congress.
Kast also reported on the Washington aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. Her stories included an investigation of anthrax in the mails and the struggles of bereaved Pentagon families to secure benefits.
At The Washington Star, in her first reporting job, Kast covered financial regulation, taxes, and energy. Her expertise in these important issues eventually led her to start a national public-television show, "This Week in Business," which she hosted in association with Business Week magazine.
Ms. Kast is a skilled interviewer. She has often hosted NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday and has her own current-affairs interview show on public radio in Maryland.
Daniel Kahikina Akaka is America's first senator of Native Hawaiian ancestry. He served as a civilian worker, then in active duty in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1943 to 1947. Sen. Akaka is the chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee and the Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and Management.
Bob Filner is the Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, a leadership post that makes him uniquely aware of the challenges facing veterans and the efforts underway to help them. He has represented Southern California’s 51st District since 1992. Before coming to Washington, D.C., he served on the San Diego City Council, the San Diego School Board, and taught history at San Diego State University.
Jeremy Chwat manages all public policy and legislative initiatives for the Wounded Warrior Project, a nationwide nonprofit organization. His office creates, monitors, and pursues the full spectrum of legislative and policy activity that affects wounded troops, both those still on active duty and those who have left the armed forces.
Michael O'Rourke monitors veterans health issues for the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. In this role, he evaluates the Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers and manages VFW positions and policies on the care of veterans.
