As a member of the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, Peter Yarrow helped create the sound of the 1960s protest movement. In addition to Peter, the trio was composed of Noel “Paul” Stookey and Mary Travers.
In 1962, on the strength of their self-titled debut album, Peter, Paul and Mary rocketed to fame. The trio's version of "If I Had A Hammer," from that album was embraced as an anthem of the civil rights movement, and later the anti-war movement.
The trio performed at the 1963 March on Washington and joined the voting-rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., in 1965.
Following their decision in the 1970s to pursue solo careers, Peter concentrated on political activism, but found continued success with music and television projects.
Peter, Paul and Mary would occasionally reunite, performing at benefits and special events. In September 2009, Mary Travers died.
Soon after Mary’s passing, Peter Yarrow spoke with Prime Time Radio host Mike Cuthbert about his career, his two colleagues, and his continued activism. Watch an excerpt, above. Or listen to our complete audio interview here.
