Thirteen years ago, the Buena Vista Social Club CD and movie had an enormous impact. But as Reese Erlich reports from Havana, much of what we've been told about the musicians who play on this recording isn't true.

Erlich explains that most of them were not living in dire poverty when they were "rediscovered." And Erlich's sources fault Wim Wenders for making a "superficial" film, and for being a "tourist."

Reese Erlich's new book about Cuba is called "Dateline Havana."
