For nearly 30 years, Forrest Church was senior minister at the All Souls Unitarian Church on Manhattan's Upper East Side. He told Mike Cuthbert that hadn't expected to live until age 60, since his father, former U.S. Sen. Frank Church of Idaho, and his grandfather had both died at 59.
Grateful to be alive, Church knew his days were numbered when he talked with Mike. He had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Forrest Church died in September, 2009, a day after his 61st birthday.
Continue the Journey:
In the spring and summer of 2009, writer Carl Lehmann-Haupt met weekly with Forrest to talk about a number of subjects. The conversations were grounded by the awareness that their time together would be short and their bond strong (Carl has also faced cancer).
The two discussed religion, regret, acceptance, appreciation, and time, among other subjects—the kinds of things we consider when the end, as they say, is near.
In these extraordinary conversations, you'll hear two thoughtful men consider their lives and deaths, and suggest, ever so gently, lessons for ours. Is it “Wednesdays With Morrie” meets “The Last Lecture”? All that, and more. You’re in for something touching and wonderful.
