Millions of Americans have experienced hard times during the economic recession, and the environment for many African Americans age 45+ and their families is particularly difficult, according to a new survey conducted by AARP. See the survey results which show that over the last 12 months, a third (33%) of African Americans 45+ surveyed are having problems paying rent or mortgage, and 44% are having problems paying for essential items, such as food and utilities. The good news is that there are many resources available to help people get back on track, and to help families make the best decisions for their health and economic future.
AARP will be a sponsor of the NAACP Symposium scheduled for Friday, February 26, 10 a.m. to noon in the Library of Congress Thomas Jefferson Building. Three noted scholars/authors, Patricia Sullivan, Kenneth Mack and Robert Zangrando, will be featured guest participants. No one thought that a New Jersey native, college science major and one-time professional running back would be working with farmers in the rural South. But, for African-American Joe James, the move offered a chance to return to his cultural and spiritual roots. After a career in economic development at the top-levels of government, Joe recognized the need to help a community that was traditionally overlooked. So he formed the Corporation for Economic Opportunity in 2004. The result: helping poor Black farmers in South Carolina struggling to make ends meet find new green ways to market their products.

It was Ben Ali with his ties to the community who helped the institution survive five decades of racial, social and economic change in D.C. and the nation.
