AARP Arizona has named Dorothy Lisonbee of Tempe, Arizona, as the recipient of this year's AARP Arizona Andrus Award for Community Service, the Association's most prestigious and visible volunteer award.
The AARP Andrus Award recognizes members and volunteers who, through volunteer service, are significantly enhancing the lives of individuals age 50 and over. The award symbolizes that people have the power and ability to make a difference in the lives of others.
"Never tiring, devoted, committed, and compassionate: all of these qualities are wrapped up in one person, Dorothy Lisonbee, this year's recipient of the 2007 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service in Arizona," said Curtis Cook, AARP Arizona Associate State Director of Community Outreach. "We're very pleased and blessed to have a person such as Dorothy as a volunteer serving the needs and interests of AARP and AASRA members throughout the state."
As a volunteer for AARP Arizona, Lisonbee's efforts over the years have exemplified the meaning of volunteerism. She has advocated on behalf on AARP on issues affecting Arizona's 50+ population, working to increase funding for home and community based services, helping to raise awareness of the need for assistance for grandparents raising grandchildren and working to improve consumer protections for all Arizonans.
In addition to her volunteer leadership role with AARP, Lisonbee has also served as a past president and board member of AASRA, the All Arizona School Retirees Association, the Arizona affiliate of the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA), where she has provided leadership, worked to increase AASRA membership, and advocated on issues of concern to educators and school retirees in Arizona.
Lisonbee is among recipients from across the nation whom AARP is honoring for their ability to enhance the lives of AARP members and prospective members, for improving communities, and inspiring others to volunteer.
