The past two years have been extraordinary for me, for AARP Virgin Islands and especially for Virgin Islands seniors.
As I look back I am amazed at how much valuable work has been accomplished on behalf of our members and our community. AARP volunteers have reached out to all corners of the territory and have provided neighbors, friends and family members with information on programs we offer, education on our legislative issues and guidance on a number of important topics.
Our advocacy and outreach work on Medicare Part D, GERS, mandatory health insurance, and drivers' safety are just a few of the types of projects that are bringing tangible assistance to our most vulnerable citizens.
All AARP VI volunteers can be gratified by their achievements. Regardless of what role you played, you were an essential member of the team. This is the kind of service and these are the types of projects that that would have made Ethel Percy Andrus proud. They are what truly makes AARP great!
And now, our united future looks brighter than ever.
Soon we will be joining AARP's nationwide "Divided We Fail" campaign. This project is intended to bring about a public movement that will demand leadership and action on health and retirement security from public officials, corporations and individuals. Nationally, "Divided We Fail" represents a formidable partnership between AARP, the Business Roundtable and the Service Employees International Union.
Locally, our campaign will represent a partnership with like-minded organizations who share AARP VI's vision of health and economic security for all Virgin Islanders. Our goal is for citizens, young and old alike, to become engaged in the movement and be part of the solution. I want to encourage every person to join us as we assemble our combined strength to send an amplified message to our own lawmakers. We want meaningful solutions to these compelling health and financial security issues to be identified and implemented - NOW!
As state president, I am excited about the tremendous potential we can possess when we choose to work in unison. Our volunteers have already demonstrated what incredible feats can be accomplished as a result of aligning their commitment, purpose and strength. I look forward to what we shall achieve and I urge everyone to join us as we embark on this very important endeavor.
