John E. Barnes of Wilmington has joined the AARP Delaware state team as their new Associate State Director of Community Outreach.

In his new role, Barnes will lead several key AARP initiatives, including the expansion and diversification of volunteers and communities served in the state's popular AARP Driver Safety Program as well as leading Delaware's new efforts to create awareness concerning issues of older workers.

"John brings more than 15 years of corporate and community relations experience to this important new post," according to Lucretia B. Young, AARP Delaware State Director. "We are delighted to benefit from his expertise in guiding a variety of organizations in designing, developing and leading volunteer and community programs."

Prior to his appointment, Barnes had recently retired from his position as Director of Annual Fund for the Delaware State University in Dover.

"Like so many other retirees, I didn't stay retired very long," Barnes said. "The enticement of continuing my career through building community partnerships on behalf of AARP, the nation's leading advocate for adults 50 plus, proved to be too enticing to pass up."

While at Delaware State, Barnes managed four annual fund campaigns netting an increase in annual giving by over 75% in the four-year period.

As consultant with Macintyre Associates, Inc. of Wilmington, Barnes designed 15 fundraising campaign feasibility studies and managed six major capital campaigns in Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He also served in human resource and public affairs posts with MBNA America Bank.

Of note are Barnes' 20 plus years of experience with the Boy Scouts of America. His ascent to Director of Field Operations in western Pennsylvania was preceded by stints in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, South Carolina and the Virgin Islands. Undoubtedly Barnes' experience with recruiting, training and directing volunteers will serve him well in his new role.

His professional and personal volunteer efforts led to the start-ups of the Delaware Association of Urban Bankers and the HOST reading and mentoring program in elementary schools. He also coordinated projects for Habitat for Humanity, meals on Wheels, the Ferris School Project and the March of Dimes Walkathon.

He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Allen University in Columbia, SC.
