In early November 2006, Evelyn Gooden accepted a two-year appointment as AARP Illinois State President. In this volunteer capacity, Gooden serves as the lead volunteer and spokesperson for AARP Illinois. Gooden, along with State Director Bob Gallo, will oversee the work of the Executive Council and collaborate with state staff in ensuring the achievement of AARP's strategic goals for Illinois.
Gooden brings an extensive record of achievement and service to her role as AARP Illinois State President. She has been a volunteer with AARP for more than eight years, and was a member of what was known as the State Leadership Council. Gooden served as the State Coordinator for Economic Security, and along with AARP staff, was responsible for public benefits outreach programs. Most notably, this community outreach program alerts seniors of valuable benefits and provides information on eligibility requirements. Gooden has also served as a Volunteer Recruiter, and Interagency Liaison working with area agencies on aging. She also serves on the board of trustees for Trinity United Church of God in Christ; one of Chicago's largest churches.
Gooden seeks to encourage and motivate other volunteers and members to get involved with the work of AARP. Speaking in regards to volunteering with AARP she said: "The very nature of what we do says that we are concerned not only about our present but also about the future. Let us as volunteers, or shall I say stakeholders, stay focused on the broader mission of positive social change; as we do this, we will be the best ambassadors for how AARP creates value for its members because of our hands on experience."
