AARP Launches Grasstops" Network"

When it comes to getting a bill passed, grassroots are an integral part of AARP's advocacy efforts. There are, however, several ways to influence an elected official. Everyone is familiar with AARP's lobby activities, both in Washington and the state capitols, but we also have a program called Grasstops, that uses AARP staff, volunteers and members to reach out to state and national representatives on a more personal level.

Grasstops are volunteers and staff who have a personal or professional relationship with a member of Congress that allows them immediate access to that Member. State offices have been actively working to identify Grasstops for key members of Congress.

AARP sponsored a Grasstops Network Kickoff meeting last week in Washington, DC. More than 120 volunteer Grasstops from 34 states attended the meeting. They heard a series of briefings from AARP's issue experts, and CEO Bill Novelli addressed the group. Then it was off to the Hill, where Grasstops met with their members of Congress and key staff, relaying information on AARP's 2007 legislative priorities, including Secretarial Negotiating Authority and additional money for LIHEAP.

We have made a great beginning, and we want to create a strong national network, so we plan to identify additional individuals who qualify as a Grasstop. If you or someone you know has a strong personal or professional relationship with a Member of Congress, House or Senate, please contact aarpcongressionalrelations@aarp.org.
