AARP GA TriUmph Classic Set for September 7

AARP Georgia has made a commitment to promote wellness, exercise and fitness activities for volunteers and members — and to make these activities fun. This year AARP Georgia is joining with various community partners to offer a variety of opportunities designed to help Georgians improve their fitness and wellness.

On September 7, the second annual TriUmph Classic 50+ swim-bike-run event will be held at Wills Park in Alpharetta. This mini-triathlon is for individuals or teams, and consists of a 400-meter swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run. Last September, 216 triathletes, many of them first-timers, participated in the inaugural event at Lake Lanier Islands. Find more information online.

In June, as part of our focus on wellness activities, AARP Georgia is joining with the State Department of Human Resources (DHR) to promote "Steps to Healthy Aging." At DHR's annual statewide conference, DHR and AARP Georgia will provide pedometers to 400 participants and encourage them to record and report their progress.

"We want them to be an example and an incentive for others," said State Director Ken Mitchell. Participants will match their results after one, six and 12 months, and various prizes will be awarded at the 2004 state conference.

In addition to the "Steps" program, AARP Georgia is working with the state and county parks and recreation officials to promote the TriUmph Classic and the Golden Olympics. In communities across the state, regional volunteer leaders are contacting their local parks and recreation officials in an attempt to organize and sponsor physical fitness activities.

"This is an opportunity for our regional teams to work at local fitness venues and to broaden our commitment to helping members stay fit and have fun," Mitchell said.
