AARP Delaware's "Star" Studded Event —The First AARP Volunteer Awards Celebration and Private Screening

The movies have their Oscars—TV has the Emmy—and now AARP Delaware has hosted their first fun-filled, "Star" gazing event to honor AARP's volunteer "Stars"—including our own 2003 Andrus Award winner, Ed Speraw of Millsboro, Delaware.

Speraw took home AARP Delaware's top honor for his remarkable service and for the impact he has had on the lives of others in the state. As President of the Delaware Manufactured Home Owners Association, Speraw was acknowledged for leading a successful grassroots campaign to improve consumer protections for more than 50,000 manufactured homeowners in Delaware.

"AARP's Andrus Award for Community Service serves as a symbol to members and the public that we can, as individuals, have 'The power to make it better' as we serve our communities," noted AARP Delaware State President Charles Jackson, who officially presented the award along with the 2002 Andrus Award winner, Georgianna Calabrese.

Nearly 100 people gathered Oct. 3 at the Cinemark Theatres in Wilmington to celebrate the "Star" power of AARP's volunteers. Attendees were treated to a day full of food, fun and festivities&madash;including a free private screening of the newly-released movie, "Secondhand Lions."*

This was the first time that the entire cadre of "Star" partners in the state gathered for a multi-program celebration that included volunteers from the AARP Driver Safety Program, AARP's Tax-Aide Program, the Delaware Money Management Program, our Legislative Advocates & Communication Liaisons as well as members of AARP Delaware's own Red Hat Brigade.
