Arizona Executive Council Leads AARP Activities

AARP in Arizona has appointed four prominent Arizonans to sit on its Executive Council. Their role is to assist the AARP state director, who is also a member of the council, in establishing the state's strategic priorities and objectives consistent with AARP's national strategic framework and policies.
"We, as Executive Council members, are involved in AARP activities throughout the state where we engage members, partner organizations and other volunteers to help further and accomplish the national goals of the association," said AARP State President Dr. Leonard Kirschner.

AARP Arizona State President Dr. Leonard Kirschner
Dr. Kirschner was appointed the Arizona AARP State President in 2007. Prior to his appointment, he served as a member of Arizona's Executive Council. Dr. Kirschner is a former director of the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS).
He has been a consultant to several Medicaid programs throughout the country with special emphasis on innovative approaches such as TennCare in Tennessee and MediCal in California. He is a former Vice President of EDS, and most recently a principal with William M. Mercer. He is a graduate of Williams College, Albany Medical College and has an MPH from Harvard University. Dr. Kirschner is board certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine and Aerospace Medical Association.
Arizona Executive Council Member William Walker
Walker spent 44 years working in media-performance, sales and corporate management. His experience includes negotiating union contracts, securing sports rights agreements for broadcasting, and drafting a corporate retirement program.
He has been a guest lecturer in communications at the University of Washington and the University of Alaska. Over the last five years, Mr. Walker has held various AARP volunteer positions including State Coordinator for Community Operations and State Coordinator for AARP Grief & Loss Programs. He is currently involved in AARP International, providing contact connections for helping to broadcast AARP messages on The Voice of America.
Arizona Executive Council Member Virginia Correa Creager, Ph.D.
Dr. Creager received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She spent 17 years in university teaching including holding faculty positions at Northern Arizona University (Payson Campus) and at Arizona State University West. She has also held a teaching position with the Payson Unified School District and spent a number of years in corporate and state administration and training. Dr. Creager has a rich history of volunteerism.
In addition to offering her time with AARP Arizona, she has volunteered with numerous nonprofit organizations including the Arizona Arthritis Association, the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.
Arizona Executive Council Member Dr. Emilia E. Martinez-Brawley, Ed.D. ACSW
Dr. Martinez-Brawley is the John F. Roatch Distinguished Professor at Arizona State University (ASU). Dr. Martinez-Brawley is the former Dean of the ASU School of Social Work, having served in that capacity from 1992 to 1998.
She was also Professor of Social Welfare in the Sociology Department at Penn State University from 1978 to 1992 and prior to that was Assistant Professor at La Salle College and Temple University in Philadelphia. Dr. Martinez-Brawley received her MSS at Bryn Mawr College and her doctorate in curriculum theory from Temple University in Philadelphia. She is the author of several books. Most recently, she has written about immigration issues in the Southwest from a global comparative perspective.
Arizona State Director and Executive Council Member David Mitchell
Mitchell joined AARP in 1983 and has served in various regional positions including Associate Area Representative for Worker Equity; as an Acting Area Director and as a Work Force Programs Representative before being appointed State Director of AARP in Arizona.
His positions for AARP has also included working as a specialist in Retirement Planning, Employment Planning and other 50+ worker issues, David has worked closely with business and industry, educational and community organizations to promote the value of the older worker. He is a frequent speaker to business and community groups on the impact 50+ workers bring to our changing economy.
Asked about those serving on Arizona's Executive Council, AARP State Director David Mitchell said, "The experience they bring in their respected fields is outstanding, and they are serving AARP members well in the state."
